Carl Samet, Bass, is known to Cape Fear audiences for his principal roles in Opera Wilmington’s productions since the company’s inception in 2014, including Colline in La Bohème and Sparafucile in Rigoletto. For several years he was a member of the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church choir where he was featured as a soloist in many works including Handel’s Messiah and the Requiem by Gabriel Fauré. He is a voice student of Dr. Nancy King.
Samet has been deeply involved in synagogue music for his entire career, singing in and preparing choirs for High Holiday services in New York, Chicago and Mobile, Alabama. He has also been engaged continuously for the past 27 years as High Holiday cantorial soloist in synagogues and temples throughout the United States, including here in Wilmington at the Temple of Israel and most recently at Temple Adat Shalom in Poway, California.
A native North Carolinian, Samet was born and raised in High Point. He holds Master of Music degrees in voice performance and choral conducting from Northwestern University, and before he returned to the Old North State he spent 18 years living and working in New York City. His career there included acting as personal assistant to violinist Isaac Stern, which was followed by a 10-year stint as one of the Emmy award winning producers of Live From Lincoln Center.
