Shannon Playl, Mezzo Soprano, is a classically trained, versatile vocalist who has been performing on stage since age 3. In Wilmington she has been seen frequently on the stage of Thalian Hall in productions by Opera House Theatre Company including South Pacific as Nellie Forbush, Will Rogers Follies as Betty Blake, Mary Poppins as Mrs. Banks, City of Angels as Alaura Kingsley, and many more including most recently as Vi Moore in Footloose. Shannon also frequently donates her time and talent to entertain at local fundraisers for non-profit organizations like A Safe Place and Common Cause NC.
Shannon received a Bachelor of Arts in music from Carson-Newman University where she was the featured mezzo-soprano soloist in the Christmas Oratorio for three years. During her tenure at Carson Newman, she sang with the A Cappella Choir for four years including tours to Europe and New Orleans with repertoire including Mozart’s Requiem, Carmina Burana, and Handel’s Messiah. Shannon is currently a soloist at St. Andrews-Covenant Presbyterian and section leader in the choir.
Beyond performance, Shannon works for PPD (now part of Thermo-Fisher Scientific) to pay the bills after ending her teaching career in 2021. Her daughter, Kathryn, is her absolute pride and joy. Other pursuits include critiquing dating apps and trying (usually unsuccessfully) to stay out of trouble. She is absolutely thrilled to join this insanely talented vocal ensemble!
